Search Engine Optimization
What is Search Engine Optimization or SEO?
SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is the process of making your website more visible to search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.). Increasing your visibility on search engines through SEO helps people (or users) who are searching for your products, services, or information, that you are an authority on, find your website. The increased visibility your pages have in SERPs (search engine result pages), the more chances your website will be found and clicked on. Clicks to your website will definitely be one of the main goals when it comes to SEO. If SEO is performed correctly, your website will attract visitors who will become customers, clients, or an audience that will revisit your website time and again
Search Engine Optimization is a very important marketing channel. Over 8 billion searches are performed daily across the globe. Google (most popular search engine) accounts for close to 85% of the search market share and 95% of mobile traffic, with Bing (it’s biggest contender) pulls 7% of US desktop searches but only 1.5% of mobile searches. Yahoo, which is powered by Bing, is in third place capturing a 2% market share.
So even though Google is king, SEO aims to optimize your website to show on all SERPs. The more your website visibility is increased, the better chance of converting your products or services.
The Three Types of SEO
Technical SEO
Technical SEO works on optimizing the technical aspects of your website. Creating a user friendly technically advanced website is a great starting point. Because Google is by far the most popular search engine, we start by using Googles best practices.
It all starts with the architecture. Building a website that can be crawled and indexed properly is a key component. Access to all the content on your pages (text, images, videos, etc.) will help with the visibility for search engines. Today’s website also needs to have a good user experience, to be mobile friendly, secure (HTTPS), xml sitemap, good web hosting, and more.
A technically sound website will definitely play a role in SEO.
On-site Optimization
On-site Optimization is the process of optimizing content on a website to drive users and improve visibility on search engines. This means you have to optimize content for users (visitors) to website and for search engines. The goal for this is to publish high-quality rich content. You need to speak to your audience in a way they will understand. And you also have to speak to the search engine bots that crawl the website.
For the audience, you need to create content that is full of the keywords that they are searching for. They want to find you in searches that are relevant to what they are searching for. And then, once they click the search they expect to be sent to a page with that information.
The search engine bots not only will they crawl the website content, they will also crawl the code. They expect to find code that coincides with the content on the page. They will look for Title Tags, Meta description, Header Tags (H1-H6), Image Alt Text, and Open Graph and Twitter Cards metadata. That’s where an SEO professional will in handy.
Off-site Optimization
Off-site optimization will be discussed on the branding page.
